Q: When and where does the poker society play?
A: We play once every week in the Student Union. We send out emails with details of the exact time and location of each game.
Q: Do I have to pay a membership fee?
A: Yes, legally we have to charge a membership fee to the society, and only society members can play in our games. Membership for the whole year costs £5. All money collected through membership fees goes towards purchasing equipment for the society (cards, chips, tables etc.) The society makes no profit whatsoever.
Q: What games do you play?
A: We usually play No Limit Hold’em, which is the game shown on Late Night Poker and the World Poker Tour. This is the most popular form of poker today. Once everyone has got used to Hold’em, we might play other games like Seven Card Stud and Omaha.
Q: How much does it cost to play poker?
A: Each tournament we play has a specified entry fee, which is usually £5. You can never spend more than this in a night.
Theoretically, the amount you can earn playing poker is unlimited. Last year, our society members won several thousand pounds playing in student competitions across the UK. If you play well, poker can be the cheapest hobby in the world.
Q: Is poker gambling?
A: Poker is a game of skill, like Bridge or Backgammon, which has an element of chance. By law, poker is defined as a game of ‘equal chance’, which separates it from games like Blackjack and Roulette where the house has an edge. In poker, there is no house, so amongst equally skilled players, nobody has an unfair advantage. However, poker must be played for something of value – points, money, or clothing for example.
Q: Is poker legal?
A: Poker tournaments fall under the same legislation as pub quizzes and karaoke competitions in the UK. As long as the society doesn’t make a profit from running the games, the games are legal.
Q: Where can I practice the game?
A: If you’re new to the game, you can learn the absolute basics of poker and the hand rankings by running the poker tutorial available online at http://www.alexdscott.co.uk/poker . Once you know the basics, you can practice against real opponents with no money involved at the World Poker Tour’s website – http://www.wptonline.com/mpp/started/started.do?aff_id=3000003. Use bonus code EDINBURGH when prompted to receive a free entry into a WPT satellite tournament.
