Not sure about the £50 rebuy, depends on the structure and closeness to pay day. (Paying back student loans and careeer development loans is a bitch!)

On a small tangent I am heading to Aspers this Saturday, they held a decent festival there recently. There is a £30 f/o on a saturday and it looks much nicer (see pic) than the grosvenor at newcastle, so I'm looking forward to that.

Massage during the break before the final table anyone?

Me and my bro were in the top 4 at the 20 NL at Maybury one Sunday nite, in fact the Sunday of the UKSPC weekend cos we busted out day 1! Both cashed for 880. Probably one of the easiest "big" games i've played in actually. The difference with playing NL clearly helped my style anyway! If i'm down in Edinburgh soon i'll give you a shout Alex, 50 NL is a little steep for my liking, although it is a freezeout (tick brain tick), good luck in any case, you should cash often!

No, all the Maybury tournaments are rebuys. The locals don't like freezeouts because most of them would only last a few minutes.

I must say Aspers was top class, there were 76 runners in the £30 f/o. Dealers provided, starting stacks of 4000, 25 minute levels and starting blinds of 25-50!!!
Dedicated poker room was very nice, electronic info about tournie everywhere avg stacks, timer's etc.

Check out my very first ever hand at asper's, in SB with 44 couple of limps I call BB taps. (200 in pot 4 players)

Flop 10 8 4 rainbow

I check, it goes check bet 100, fold, I check raise to 300, fold, call

Turn Q, I bet 800 he calls.

River 4 (you gotta love a casino where you hit quads in your very first hand)

I bet 1000 , he calls I show my quads and he shows 8 3 for 8's up!

Anyway, my profit soon left after having to make a big laydown (correctly as it turned out), flopping two pair an a big blind special 6 3 on an A 6 3 flop.

Tripled up with aces v Q's and AK, couple of bluffs and value bets later I find myself at the final table as one of 3 shortish stacks (about 18k at 1500-3000). I thought a guy was stealing and I pushed with Q9s, and he had Jacks (oops) flop was Jack high, exit stage left in 8th with £90 definitely to return.

Nothing spectacular needed to make the FT, tournie is definitely +EV

I joined on entry, just took my passport.

I was thinking maybe of a group trip (mentioned it to Alex and Accie), get cheap train tickets hit the friday and saturday f/o's then hit the town and crash at mine. (I'll have to check with my Dad and stuff)

If people fancy it, we can sort out a weekend HWUPS jolly!

That sounds like a plan Marcus - will definitely be up for that some time. I'm at the Gutshot just now awaiting the start of £5 rebuy tourney. Got a feeling it'll be crapshooty but we'll see!

I'm definitely up for Aspers, sounds like a good tourney.

The Maybury is much improved since the last time I was there. The structure is the same, but they have a computerised system that makes registration and seat assignments much easier. The standard of play is still appalling, especially during the rebuy stages.

My hand of death was pocket queens. With the blinds at 100-200 I made it 800 under the gun, and the guy to my left made it 2800 (he had about 8000, I had about 14,000). I set him in, and he instantaneously called with A-10 offsuit, hitting an ace on the flop to cripple me.

Scott is still in after he resucked against a man who had uninstalled his fold button. On a flop of A-x-x, Scott made a big bet holding A-10 and got called. The turn was a 5, Scott moved all-in and got called - by A-5 offsuit. The river was a pleasant surprise - a ten (pairing one of the other two flop cards would also have won if I remember correctly). If he doesn't cash I'll be most disappointed!

All the poker stories sound good guys, i am quite jealous.

Stuart, why were u at the gutshot? I played that £5 tourney last tuesday as I am living in between London and Frankfurt at the moment! If your about at any time let me know, Im always keen for a bit of poker!

Did Scott cash?

Yep, i managed to cash. There was money for the top 6 but when we got down to 7 we did a deal. I ended up getting £1120. I was a little worried about doing a deal as i've had no experience of that before but since third paid £1300 it seemed fair enough.

Overall I enjoyed the tournament, most of the people were nice and as Alex said the standard of play wasn't that high.

Btw Marcus i'm up for the Aspers too.

First of all, very well done Scott! That's a great result!

Second, yes the £5 re-buy was a crapshoot, but what do you expect for that price?

I must say that I didn't very much enjoy the Gutshot experience.

I sent them an e-mail about a week ago asking what games would be available on the night I was visiting - I got no reply.

When I got there, there were no cash games with an open seat, so I went and played on the internet for a while.

The tournament felt like something Edinburgh University would run - that is to say it was a shambles.

The highlight of the tournament would be sitting down and seeing Anna across the felt from me! She then decided to remind me of an 'illegal' play I made against her in a tournament over a year ago, when I announced 'check' out of turn (accidentally), and then raised her bet!

I then played a £1/£2PL cash game, but my £100 buy-in was never really going to allow me to play this properly, as there was often a straddle to £5. People also limp-raised hands like A6o. You need to be sitting down with about £400-£500 (there is no max buy-in) to play this properly. I left with £101.50 as I wasn't able to play well with the amount of money I had. I didn't much enjoy the hour or so that I played for - too many unpleasant people. One person's behaviour in particular was an absolute disgrace, berating an opponent in a very aggressive manner after raking in a £600 pot from him. The same person also made fun of my pink tie!

The interview with Stars went well, so there is a good chance I will be back down in London soon - I'll let you know if/when I am Brian.

Finally, if I do get this job, and IF I get to work from home (like Alex), I will be moving back to Edinburgh at some point and will be up for regular trips to the Maybury.

Congrats Scott, am I right in saying you're the 1st of us to a 4 figure live win? Hope you didn't desert Scott before his moment of glory Alex!

Aspers trip is looking good, maybe aim for september near my birthday maybe 16-17 sept [due to ed festival in aug and my mum's over from Canada in aug/early sept] I noticed Ian, Stephen and I are all born within like 3 days of each other, Virgo's are tough to read it seems!

Oh, and good luck on the job front Stuart!

BigD wrote:

I rebought twice and added on.

The first rebuy happened after I raised in mid position with 10's and got two callers. Flop came down A 10 4 all clubs. First guy checks, I go all in (can't remember size of bets or pot) and second guy goes all in and has me covered. First guy calls and shows Jcx first guy Q7c. Club hits on the turn. REBUY!

Second time the very next hand I'm dealt 56 sooted. Three see a flop of 4 4 3 two clubs. I bet, one guy calls. Turn 7, I push sure my straight is good. He calls and shows QJ of clubs. River...... Club. REBUY!

At the end of the rebuy period I had a little less than my starting stack and wasn't sure whether it was worth adding on or not as alot of people had huge stacks after the rebuy madness and would probably knock me out. I spoke to Alex about it and in the end decided I would. Glad I did now

I got my winnings in cash but I'm going to find out if you can get a cheque instead. Just in case I cash again

Ok guys shall we say Fri October 6 - Sunday Oct 8th for the trip

(Dad was fine he's used to climbing over people on my living room floor - almost half the embarrassing photos in the best mans speech at my mate's wedding had my house in the background).

So now we can decide whether going by train or car is better. Getting there in time for the Friday f/o might be a struggle as it has sold out an hour early recently and kicks off at 830pm. I normally get the train at 5pm get to town at 630 could head to casino sign up and head back to mine to dump stuff and return though. Sat £30 f/o is at 630pm leaving time for a few more beers at a club afterwards. (Newcastle is quite picky on dress code to clubs but the bouncers are less drunk unfriendly than up here!)

Oh, and bring real money!
